Drive System Retrofit of the SIU40 Lathe

The modernization and repair of the SIU40 lathe drive system includes implementing a modern drive based on the advanced digital DC thyristor converter Mentor MP 75A4R by Control Techniques (Nidec). This new control system ensures excellent precision, high operational dynamics, and stable speed regulation of the machine.

Deploying a modern Mentor MP thyristor converter or a Unidrive M series variable speed drive allows for the complete elimination of unreliable and obsolete analog components. Implementing digital control guarantees full oversight over the main motor parameters via feedback loops, optimizing machining processes and radically reducing the risk of costly production downtime.

Hardware Specification & Delivery:

  • Thyristor Converter: Mentor MP 75A4R (Control Techniques) complete with an SM-KEYPAD text panel for fast diagnostics.
  • Short-Circuit Protection: Industrial fuse base by Apator equipped with dedicated ultra-fast semiconductor fuses to protect the thyristor modules.
  • Operator HMI Panel: Advanced 4" touchscreen panel by Delta Electronics (DOP series) providing an intuitive operator interface and comprehensive alarm logging.

Scope of Engineering Works:

  • Complete dismantling of the existing, obsolete DC converter from the control cabinet.
  • Installation and integration of the new digital Mentor MP or Unidrive M drive into the existing system topology.
  • Necessary modifications and optimization of the internal control cabinet wiring.
  • Full motor tuning, current loop parameterization, and commissioning of the new drive system.
  • [Optional] Measurement system upgrade – replacing the traditional tacho generator with a precise incremental or absolute encoder.
  • [Optional] Complete replacement of the DC motor with a modern, energy-efficient permanent magnet (PM) servo motor.
  • Performing technical commissioning, mechanical tests, and full load test runs under production conditions.
  • Delivery of comprehensive as-built documentation along with drive parameter backups.
